Program Note
Jacqueline, alone and haunted, wanders Greek seaside villages. Her eyes show unease, caution, sadness, and a thick aura of despair. Homeless and hungry, she seeks shelter and sustenance each day, lost in her desperate circumstances. Though Jacqueline exists in the present, her past memories intrude abruptly. A once beautiful time of love and family transforms into a harrowing tragedy endured by her loved ones. How can those who barely survived continue living? The film explores the wreckage of Jacqueline’s inner world, her state of physical and psychological drift in the aftermath of catastrophe. Anthony Chen, known for his debut film Ilo Ilo (2013) from Singapore, adapts Alexander Maksik’s novel for his first English-language feature. Cynthia Erivo, acclaimed for her performances in Broadway musicals and the film Harriet (2019), plays Jacqueline, conveying intense surges of emotion. (JEONG Jihye)
