Bunshinsaba

Ahn Byung-gi

Korea2004 120min 35mm Color World Premiere

Synopsis

Yu-jin(LEE Se-eun), a new student from Seoul, gets ostracized by her classmates. Not able to endure her classmates' treatment, she starts to chant a curse-Bunshinsaba-and her classmates start to meet violent deaths one by one. In the mean time, the new arts teacher Eun-ju(KIM Kyu-ri) starts having nightmares about In-suk(LEE Yu-ri), who died almost 30 years ago. The deaths of the students lead the school and the village into a frenzy, and the truth behind the curse is slowly revealed. Director of the films A Nightmare and Phone, AHN Byung-ki has constantly made films that, while following the conventions of horror films, have a unique voice of thier own. One of the major characteristics of his films have been that in his film there is always a beautiful yet bestial female character. Bunshinsaba is a flim about how we, as a group, ostracize those from the outside, and compared to his earlier films the female characters are more strange and mysterious. KIM Ku-ri, who made her debut as a student in Whipering Corridors stars as a teacher in this flim, and one can't help but feel that the girl from Whipering Corridors has returned as a teacher. Newcomers LEE Se-eun and LEE Yu-ri are both superb in the flim, and their performances will remain in the viewer's head long after the film ended. The director's films A Nightmare and Phone were both selected as closing film for PiFan, on the 4th and 6th, respectively. (Ellen KIM)
