Synopsis

A newly married woman brings an antique Jewish box into her home, unaware that the box contains the ghost of Abraham Ezra, which possesses her. Little do they know that this is nothing in the grand scheme of things, as fateful events stretch back over the last century or more.

Program Note

A loving couple, Ranjan and Priya, live in Mumbai. They are worried that Priya’s parents would not get along with Ranjan since Ranjan is a Christian. Ranjan believes that the problem will be solved once a baby is born. Ranzan, who is in charge of nuclear waste management (which can potentially threaten the entire city if mishandled) moves to Kochi with Priya. Priya buys an antique box. After Priya opens the box, a supernatural phenomenon occur. Ranjan brings a rabbi and tries to conduct an exorcism on pregnant Priya. In the Bible, Ezra, another Jewish Moses, was banned from marrying a non-Jewish woman. This is the motif of this film. This is a horror mystery thriller film in the Bollywood genre, which is a compound word for Bumbai, Mumbai’s old name, and Hollywood. Commercialism, musical elements, and overly optimistic endings are some of the aspect that the Korean audience did not find appealing at the time, but now the perception has changed a lot. EZRA embroiders the conventions of horror genre and cliche as sensuous images as appliqué on it like a mosaic. (HONG Eun-hwa)
